Crandon (113 & 2-37) dominates, Jacobs (4-27 & 55*) stakes claim for debut pick
By Sean Devers
Royston Crandon smashed a 98-ball 113 and took 2-37 while West Indies under-19 player Steven Jacobs grabbed 4-27 and hit an unbeaten run-a-ball 55 to stake a claim for a debut senior regional One-Day call-up when the first Guyana 50-overs cricket trail ended at the Everest ground on Tuesday.
Crandon, the only player to score a debut century since regional limited overs cricket began in 1973, clobbered seven fours and four massive sixes and added 87 for the fifth wicket with Assad Fudadin (40) as Mahendra Nagamootoo’s X1 reached 256-9 off their allotted 42 overs as off-spinner Jacobs bowled impressively and got support from pacer Trevon Garraway (3-47).
The 20-year-old Jacobs then stroked four fours and a six in his entertaining unbeaten half-century after Shemroy Barrington (64) and Maxie DeJonge (38) had added 105 for the first wicket for Esuan Crandon’s X1 who could only reach 223-5 when their overs expired.
The match began 35 minutes late in sweltering heat and was reduced to a 42-over affair because the condition of the ground which hosted a social activity over the weekend and still had broken bottles on parts of the outfield.
When the action commenced at 10:06hrs, Garraway removed Chris Barnwell (5) and Test player Narsingh Deonarine (3) to leave Nagamootoo’s X1 on 19-3.
West Indies under-19 player Rajendra Chandrika (30) was removed by pacer Brandon Bess at 54-3 before Crandon, who stroked the ball with confidence and authority, repaired the damage with his partnership with Fudadin before Jacobs got rid of Chandrika at 141-4.
The 25-year-old Crandon, who has 225 runs from 10 regional One-Day games since his debut against the Windaward Islands in Grenada in 2007, was eventually caught at short mid-wicket off Jacobs at 236-7.
Barrington, a 2007 Guyana under-19 opener, played an array of scintillating shots; including a number of scoop sweeps and along with DeJonge gave Crandon’s X1 a solid foundation on a slow track and fast outfield before Barrington needlessly walked across his wicket in the 24th over to tickle Nagamootoo fine, and was bowled behind his back after hitting five fours and a six from 76 balls.
DeJonge, whose innings included five boundaries and lasted 74 balls, was then taken at long-on off Zaheer Mohamed at 109-2 before Jacobs, who hot four fours and a six and Devon Clements (45) took the score to 191 with positive stroke play and energized running between the wickets.
Clements, who hit four fours and a six in his 49-ball innings, was removed by Royston Crandon who also had his brother Esuan stumped for a duck at 198-5 after Orin Forde (3) had lofted Barnwell to deep mid wicket at 197-4.
The second of three trial matches is scheduled for today from 09:15hrs at the Police ground and Guyanese Stanford Superstars members Lennox Cush and Travis Dowlin could be involved the match after they were expected to arrive in Guyana from Antigua on Monday evening.
