Police on the East Coast of Demerara say that they are closing in on a man who allegedly set fire to his house after he reportedly failed in his attempt to kill his family.
The man’s house, which he shared with his wife, Ramdie Mahdeo, and their five children, was completely destroyed on Sunday morning.
Kaieteur News understands that the police had staked out a plot of land where the man, identified as Hardat Ramsaroop, cultivates a garden, but apart from some kitchen utensils, there has been no other sign of the suspect.
The police also said that they have circulated a message to their counterparts in Berbice, where they believe the man may be heading, since he has several relatives there.
The man’s wife has been staying at neighbours since last week, fearing for her life as well as for the safety of her children.
Yesterday, neighbours said that the woman is afraid to walk alone, and her children have had to stay away from school, fearing that they could be attacked by their father.
“As long as the police don’t catch him, he gone try fuh kill dem,” a neighbour suggested.
Surswattie Ramsaroop, the couple’s eldest daughter, told this newspaper that her father has constantly made threats to kill her mother and then hang himself.
The teenager said that, for two weeks now, the police have been looking for her father but he always manages to elude them.
“He does work, but he only work one week and then he start drink again. Me mother does work; she minding we all the time,” the 14-year-old told this newspaper.
Her uncle, who lives nearby, said that on several occasions he confronted the man after his sister received a beating.
He said that for the past week he has been looking for the suspected arsonist to ensure his sister’s safety.
There are reports that the suspect was spotted bathing in a canal in a nearby village yesterday afternoon.
However, by the time the police were informed, he had already made good his escape.
Neighbours are fearful that the man would make good on his threat to kill his family, and they are urging the police to intensify their efforts to apprehend him.
