BK International Western Tigers defeated long time rivals Pele 2-0 and host team Fruta Conquerors hammered GFC 3-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the 2008 Namilco Football Festival following quarter-final rivalry on Sunday evening at the Tucville ground.
The Tigers, who were relegated to division one from the Premier League and have since dominated all an sundry at that level, have sounded a warning to their Premier League rivals that they will be back with vengeance following their demolition of Pele who continues to struggle.
Even without the services of power forward Devon Millington and an ordinary performance from Edison Gomes, the Tigers were still able to out play Pele, scoring goals either side of play.
Maxwell Pellew gave them the lead 10 minutes into the game as they looked a sound and business like unit on the night.
Their quick play in offence backed up by sound midfield and defensive work were too much for Pele to handle as their defence led by captain Dirk Archer folded under the constant pressure.
So too was stand in custodian Solomon Austin who took charge in the absence of Shemroy Arthur who is sidelined with an injury.
Pele never looked too threatening as the Tigers matched and out matched them in every department. Their technical staff will have a lot of work to do to boost their tactical and physiological abilities ahead of this year end’s Kashif and Shanghai Championships.
Goal number two was netted by Jarrel Tyrell in the 73rd minute to seal a composed and sound victory for the Tigers who will face off with host team Fruta Conquerors in semi-final action on Friday.
Conquerors paced themselves well against a tuff Georgetown Football Club side which held strong for 75 minutes of the contest but were not able to withstand the constant banging of the home teams
forward line led by teenage striker, Manasseh Primo who broke the deadlock in the 75th minute in grand style.
Primo took the ball on his cheat in the six yard area from a corner, skillfully brought it under control before unleashing a powerful right foot shot to the near post. The goal broke the concentration and focus of GFC who cracked up their after.
It was a mere four minutes later that Jomo Hinds increased the lead for Conquerors and on the stroke of full time, Theon Carr scored one for good measure.
Conquerors, who themselves were struggling a bit in the premier league have been increasing in confidence, opting for a mixture of youth and experience. Regular captain Neville Stanton and fellow senior Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters both sat out Sunday night’s game.
With both teams on the rise again, their semi-final showdown is expected to be a mouth watering affair with the fans from West and their counterparts from Tucville set to come out in their numbers in support of their local stars.
The final two quarter-final matches will be contested tomorrow evening with the respective winners meeting in the other semi-final on Friday.
It will be the battle of the Bakewell teams tomorrow, East Demerara’s Bakewell Buxton Stars tangle with Alpha United, while Bakewell Topp XX face off with Sunburst Camptown.
