Speedboat operators have expressed the need for lights to be installed at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling
Speedboat operators plying the Demerara River crossing have noted the need for some lighting to be installed at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling.
In a recent interview, they have said that it has become increasingly difficult to navigate into the landing between 17:30 hours and 18:00 hours.
The speedboat service ceases to work at 18:00 hours, but the last boat usually begins to board at approximately 17:30 hours. At this time of the year, by the time the vessel has been boarded, and it has crossed the river (to Vreed-en-Hoop), dusk has already set in.
Speedboat captains and bowmen said that a lighting system is necessary so as to prevent a mishap, which they have said is bound to happen. “If we crash up, dem people gun blame we,” said one of the captains, “But dem ain’t understand how hard we does got it, trying to catch the stelling when de place ain’t got light.”
A member of the Demerara River Speedboat Association said that the Association was in full support of having some sort of lighting installed, citing that it was better to prevent an accident than fix it later on.
