Old Fort produced a big win while there were mixed fortunes for GCC, Western Dragons and the Hikers on Friday night as play in the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships continued.
The Western Dragons received a double punch in the opening matches as Hikers B and GCC Tigers ladies routed them 7-1 in the men’s 2nd division and 8-0 in the ladies competitions respectively.
Although Dragons B scored the first goal of the second division clash against the Hikers through Carl Anderson, an Andrew Stuart hat-trick, a double by Shaquille Assanah and singles by Antonio Pemberton and Jason Hoyte put the match well beyond their reach.
The Dragons ladies never were able to mount much of an attack against a well-rehearsed GCC Tigers side in the clash that followed resulting in the 8-0 victory for the Tigers.
Ashley DeGroot led the scores with a double while Trisha Woodroffe, Marzena Fiedtkou, Sonia Jardine, Dominique DeGroot, Gabriella Xavier and Brianna Gordon each added singles.
Dragons A would however secure a lone 2nd division victory for the evening with a walkover from Degenerates.
The highly anticipated clash in the men’s first division between Hikers and GCC A failed to live up to its billing as Everest, fielding a weakened line-up due to injuries, received a 6-3 hammering from an unforgiving GCC.
GCC were up 3-0 by the half through goals from Orland Semple, Patrick Edghill and Devin Hooper before easing the throttle. Hikers would make a late attempt to recapture some ground managing three goals in the late minutes of the match through a Shane Samuels field goal and penalty corners by Robert France and Devin Munroe.
GCC would pour in three more goals of their own however to maintain their comfortable margin through Kevin Spencer, Alan Fernandes and Andrew Xavier.
Old Fort secured the other first division victory of the evening in the final match against GCC B by 4-2. Despite getting on the scoreboard first just 6 minutes into the game, Old Fort would run off four unanswered goals before GCC could muster a second.
Despite a spirited effort, the weakened GCC B tired as the match went on and did not have the depth necessary to keep pace with Old Fort. Philip Fernandes netted the double for GCC while Jonathan Roberts did the same for Old Fort which was supported by singles from Chris Low-Koan and Jason Dos Santos.
After two nights of competition, Old Fort and GCC A lead the first division tables with 3 points each and Hikers and GCC B follow with no points. Old Fort B and Dragons A top the second division table with 3 points from 1 match each while Everest B also have 3 points from 2 matches. Dragons B and the Carib Degenerates remain with no points.
In the ladies division the GCC Tigers lead the table with 6 points with Hikers on 3 and Dragons on 0.
