In support of the Rotary Club of Demerara’s literacy and numeracy programme for prisoners, Digicel yesterday donated five computer systems to the Guyana Prison Service.
Each of the five prisons across the country will receive one of the computers some time this week.
The Rotary Club’s literacy and numeracy programme is geared towards improving prisoners’ education while they are incarcerated. The intention is to increase the likelihood of them securing and retaining employment in better paying jobs after their release.
The computers were received on behalf of the Prison Service by Director Dale Erskine, who noted that the computers were “a significant contribution to the ongoing reformation efforts at the prisons across Guyana.”
The computer systems, he added, would help the Prison Service to achieve its goal of releasing “someone who is better able to properly reintegrate into the society and make a meaningful contribution.”
Also at the presentation ceremony, held at the Prison Officers’ Club, was Digicel’s Network Manager Ryan Sinclair, who officially handed the computers over to the Prison Service.
As he handed over the machines, Sinclair said that the donation was a demonstration of “Digicel’s commitment to ensuring that everyone moves forward in this technology-driven world we live in.”
Rotarian Lance Hinds expressed his thanks to Digicel for its contribution towards the Club’s literacy and numeracy programme.
Hinds added that the programme should attract and retain competent and qualified volunteers, who will be able to provide training programmes to the prisoners, while also providing teaching aids to better enhance the learning environment.
