Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ are set and ready for battle in the final group two phase of the Digicel Caribbean Championships set to kick off tomorrow evening at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago.
The Jaguars are in the final stages of preparation for this all important stage and will battle St. Kitts and Nevis in their first game tomorrow, Antigua and Barbuda and host nation T&T will collide with the top two teams advancing to the finals set for Jamaica next month.
Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover speaking with Kaieteur Sport last evening after another session, said the camp is going excellent to date. “The guys have been showing great togetherness in the sessions and have been mixing well.
The players based in England, Guyana and Trinidad. The mood among players and staff is very encouraging and I am confident Guyana will win all three matches, move on to the finals and do well there also, but we will take things in stride.”
The five English based players from reports have blended well with the T&T Pro League players and those who travelled from Guyana last week.
Those from England are Shawn Beveney, Chris Nurse, John Rodrigues and the Newton brothers, Jake and Howard.
Devon Millington, Dwayne Jacobs, Dwight Peters, Shawn Bishop and Kester Jacobs were the players travelling from Georgetown last week to link with captain Charles ‘Lilly’ Pollard, Howard Lowe, Walter Moore, Carey Harris, Andrew Durant, Richard Reynolds, Collie Hercules, Kayode McKinnon, Randolph Jerome, Konata Manning and Gregory Richardson.
Guyana had dominated the rest of the region in the 2006/07 group one and two phases playing unbeaten in all six matches, winning their respective groups in the Netherlands Antilles and here.
They will be aiming for a repeat of that performance and to follow on from their group win in the first phase here a few months ago when they won ahead of old nemesis Suriname and Dominica.
Coming up against St. Kitts & Nevis in their first game tomorrow, the Jaguars will be going all out for a big and comprehensive win. The Kittians finished as the runner up team when they hosted The British Virgin Islands and Barbados, the Bajans going on to win the group.
Their clash against Antigua and Barbuda on Friday will also be an interesting clash with the Jaguars seeking to redeem themselves after going down to the Antiguans with a second string team.
The Antiguans will remember the trashing their received from the full fledged Jaguars in the last Digicel Championship and in their two game series here.
The final game of the group is the big clash between the Jaguars and Soca Warriors and promises to be an exciting dual.
The team from Soca Land have been having their way against the Jaguars, but word is out that that reign is about to come to an end, come Sunday evening.
With the likes of Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, just off representing Trinidad and Tobago’s Joe Public in the CONCACAF Champions League, Captain and senior Statesman Charles Pollard, Howard Lowe, Dwight Peters, Shawn Bishop, John Rodrigues and Collie Hercules among others will be combining to ensure the Jaguars qualify for the finals in Reggae Island, Jamaica.
