Nineteen-year-old Travis Blyden produced a useful all-round performance at Bourda on Sunday to spur Transport Sports Club (TSC) to one-wicket victory against Everest in the Georgetown final of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Hand-in-Hand 50-overs second division knock-out cricket competition.
TSC who reached 146-9 off 35 overs replying to the 145-9 innings closed off 39 overs made by Everest, will now face East Coast champions Lusignan in their semi-final encounter.
Asked to bat on a slow track with lots of moisture in the game which was reduced to 42 overs due to morning rain, Everest slumped to 88-8 before left-hander Denis Mangru, who finished 33 not out and Andrew Lovell (18), took the score to 121 when Lovell lost his wicket.
Last man Javed Rasheed (7) offered good support to Mangru before he got a bouncer from Kevin Alphonso which cut him above his temple resulting in him having to retire hurt to go for an X-Ray at the hospital. He later returned to bowl in the TSC innings.
Ryan Rajmangal, who was run out for 27, was the only other Everest batsman to reach 20 as the in-form Troy Gonsalves was bowled for a third ball duck by Travis Gittens who finished with 3-38 to support Blyden who had 3-17 from nine overs with his leg-spin.
Blyden then returned with the bat to stroke an unbeaten 40 and along with Steven Alves (16) added 39 for the sixth wicket to stage a recovery for his team who had slumped to 46-5.
Once Alves slogged swept left-arm spinner Raymond Singh and was caught and bowled off the top edge at 85-6, Everest were still in the fight and when Gittens was run out for 16 leaving 11 required with the last pair at the wicket, it was anybody’s game.
But the talented Blyden kept his head and ensured TSC won with seven overs remaining as Gonsalves took 2-38 and West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan 2-29 in a losing effort for the Camp Road side.
