Sylvan Gardner recently returned to Guyana after a highly successful sojourn in the United States of America where he won the Musclemania Superbody title in the lightweight and overall category and as a token of appreciation, the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) and Banks DIH Ltd each presented him with a plaque in commemoration of his sterling achievement.
The ceremony was held at the Banks DIH headquarters, Thirst Park, yesterday afternoon and was attended by Minister of Youth and Sports Mr Frank Anthony, Gardner’s colleagues and executives of the GABBFF.
The Sports Minister labeled Gardner’s performance as the perfect example to emulate.
He said that the feats of the young bodybuilder should serve as a reminder to all and sundry of the rewards of dedication. “He has demonstrated how to compete and win; he is a role model for all upcoming athletes,” the Minister said.
Mr Anthony further emphasized the importance of sports, not only as a nation builder but as a means of rising above the proletariat. “Sport can earn you a living; if you are dedicated and committed to your cause you can achieve a lot through sports,” Mr Anthony further stated.
He also pointed out that support of family and friends is a very important variable if goals are to be attained. “The input of corporate citizens is also a very important part of the equation,” the Sports Minister reminded.
As such, he urged other corporate entities to emulate Banks DIH in taking bodybuilding to another level. He subsequently directed his closing remarks to Gardner, “I hope that you continue to serve as an inspiration to other young people. The nation hopes that you continue in the same vein.”
President of the GABBFF, Frank Tucker lauded Gardner’s achievement saying that the bodybuilder has shown Guyana and the rest if the world that he can cope with opposition anywhere.
Tucker said that Gardner is still to realize his full potential and the GABBFF will aspire to support him in any way possible. “I wish you all the best in your future endeavours,” Tucker assured Gardner.
Gardner was very humble in victory. He said that he was very grateful to Hugh Ross for making his participation in the Muslemania Superbody competition a reality. He also stated that he is looking forward to making Guyana proud through his participation in future competitions in the USA.
Communications manager of Banks DIH Ltd, Troy Peters reminded that his company has always stood firmly behind Gardner and by extension, bodybuilding.
He mentioned the recently held Hugh Ross Classics and the National Bodybuilding Championships, two competitions that were stoutly supported by the beverage giants. Peters subsequently urged Gardner to keep the Golden Arrowhead flying.
Peters took the opportunity to remind the small gathering of the launching of an energy malt labeled N-ER-G, soon to be released on the local market. Peters assured that the beverage will provide lots of energy and as such epitomizes the young bodybuilder.
