Essequibo fast bowler Trevor Benn bowled with plenty of hostility to claim 5-43 and lead Meten-Meer-Zorg to a seven-wicket win against Cultural at the Kawall school ground in Canal Number Two Village in the final of the Aqua Farm West Demerara 40-overs second division cricket competition.
Benn, who plays for Police at the first division level in Georgetown, got support from fellow Essequibo player Rakesh Goberdhan (3-23) and left-arm pacer Mahendra Nankishore (2-20) as Cultural fell for 110 in 25.3 overs.
Nankishore returned to top score with 28 as Meten-Meer-Zorg reached 114-3 in 27.4 overs to win by seven wickets on a good batting pitch.
Cultural slipped to 18-3 before DCC first division player Jamal Hinkson (24) and Avinash Sookdeo (22) repaired the damage with a 40-run partnership before Benn separated the pair by trapping Sookdeo leg before.
Nandkishore, who hit a four and a six in his innings, added 21 for the first wicket with wicketkeeper Troy Khan (10) when MMZ began their reply before Khan was leg before to Travis Gittens.
Imtiaz Ishmael removed Nankishore at 56-2 while Shawn McKay (13) was caught behind off Steve Harripaul at 61-3.
Avinash Shardandana (22*) and Seymour Evans (24*) then ensured no further wickets fell as they shared in an unfinished 54-run fourth wicket stand to see their team to victory and the $100,000 first prize.
Cultural collected the runner-up prize of $50,000 while Benn received $10,000 for being named the Man-of-the-Match.
Ameer Aziz copped the $5,000 prize for batsman with the most runs in the competition while Shardananda took the $5,000 prize for the bowler with the most wickets in the tournament.
Khan collected the $5,000 prize for best keeper in the final, while Gittens took away the $5,000 prize for the best fielder in the final.
At the presentation, President of the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) Anand Sanasie congratulated the winners and told the gathering that he hopes the practice of clubs using players from ‘outside’ of West Demerara for club matches in the area is stopped since he feels when the players go back to their clubs it leaves a hole in the West Demerara teams which he feels need to do more to expose more West Demerara players.
