‘This will be a major asset’ – Regional Chairman
Bartica will soon be equipped with fire-fighting capabilities, when the fire station which is under construction is completed by the end of this year.
The structure, which will cost some $9M, is being constructed in Fourth Avenue.
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights says that the initiative has been very much welcomed by the community. He said that the fire tender is expected to arrive some time during this month.
Knights explained that while Bartica has not been plagued with an alarming amount of fires, the facility is still needed.
He said that in the past, when fires broke out, residents were forced to form bucket brigades as their sole means of fighting those fires. Unfortunately, in most instances, the buildings were completely destroyed.
The Regional Chairman noted that, while the efforts by residents have been commendable, the reality is that their efforts cannot match the capabilities of a fire tender.
The fire station will not only be serving areas in the central parts of Bartica, but will also serve communities along the Bartica-Potaro Road.
For this year, the Bartica community has had only two fires, which, according to the Regional Chairman, are “two fires too many”. He compared that figure to the community going for a six-year period without a single fire.
Apart from the two fires this year, there was a recent instance, during which the pavilion which is famous for hosting some of the Bartica Regatta events was almost destroyed. That structure was fortunately saved through the efforts of the residents and their bucket brigade.
Back in June, a house at Mora Point was completely destroyed when an arsonist went to work after he had chopped his reputed wife, Simone Fiedtkou, before tying her up in the house and setting it afire. The man who set the fire, Desmond Lawlist, died shortly after when he ingested a poisonous substance.
Other major fires which placed Bartica in the spotlight included the one which claimed the life of national footballer Neil Hernandes.
Police removed his partially burnt body from the ruins of a two-storey building. To date, neither the cause of that fire nor the cause of Hernandez’s death has been determined.
Also, back in December last year, the male dormitory of the Bartica Secondary School was completely destroyed by fire.
