Within Freedom House there is great excitement. It is said that now that our Great Leader, Bharrat, has endorsed Barack, there is no way that Barack can lose today’s election in the United States of America.
Bharrat made his endorsement public at a press conference held on Saturday.
A statement may have sufficed, but it seems clear that Bharrat is so enthused about Barack that he had to bring the press corps out of their beds on a Saturday morning just to confirm his support for Barack.
Of course, the naysayers within our midst were quick to condemn the timing of Bharrat’s endorsement. It came at the most unholy hour when it was clear that Obama would win regardless of what happened in the last few days of the campaign.
Bharrat was quick to debunk that notion, pointing out that, during the Caribbean Diaspora Conference, he had urged support for Obama. He even said that if it were allowed, he would himself vote for the Democratic nominee.
He then outlined his reasons for supporting Obama. On every single ground he is wrong. Today, I wish to debunk every one of the reasons given by Bharrat for supporting Obama. I do so, however, in the confidence that it will not affect the outcome of today’s election, because the polls, which have been extremely accurate throughout the election season, are predicting an easy victory for Barack Obama.
Our Great Leader, Bharrat, needs to disabuse himself of two myths. The first has to do with how far America has come since the days of segregation. It was only a short while ago that Bharrat was bemoaning the disproportionate representation of blacks in the U.S. Senate.
Yet, now that we are on the cusp of the descendant of a black immigrant becoming the President of the United States, our own Bharrat is boasting of the advances of America since Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus.
This is all a myth. Also a myth is the so-called symbolism of Barack’s success. No one must delude himself into believing that the rise to national prominence of Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and now Barack Obama means that race relations have come a far way since the 1950’s.
They have not. There are serious problems in race relations in America, which will not go away that easily just because the descendants of blacks have been
