Rudy Grant made it two in a row when he followed up his Men’s Over-35 Singles win by capturing the O-45 division last Friday night by beating Stephen David Longe in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 as play in this year’s Le Meridien Pegasus Open Tennis Tournament continued at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
In his Men’s O-45 clash against David Longe, Grant as usual started off slowly and appeared to be struggling to find his rhythm, but after the match was tied at 3-3 in the opening stanza, Grant suddenly reeled off three straight games to wrap up the set.
In the second set, the two leveled at 2-2, before Grant once again showed his class, hitting some deft drop volleys that the visibly exhausted David Longe had difficulty returning and easily dropped the next four games to concede the match to Grant.
In other results: Ezra Sue-Ho created a major upset when he eliminated last year’s losing Men’s Singles finalist Anthony Downes in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to make it to his first final in this division.
He now meets the winner of the clash between defending champion Phillip Squires and Grant which will be played today.
The combination of Don Singh / Omar Persaud then beat Maxie Fox / Victor Da Silva 6-0, 6-2 to claim the Men’s O-35 doubles crown.
In the other game scheduled for today, Carol Humphrey engages Shauna Gentle in the Ladies Singles semi-final with the winner to face reigning champion Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan.
All outstanding finals will be played tomorrow.
