The Barakat Brothers 20/20 Cricket Competition was officially lunched last Monday at Feroze Barakat’s residence, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
The competition will be played with white balls and coloured clothes and has attracted 11 teams from West Coast Demerara and one from the Island of Leguan.
The competition will be played on a round robin base with six teams in zone ‘A’ and five in zone ‘B’. Crane, Shamrock, Meten-Meer-Zorg Sports Club A and B, Zeelugt and Leguan are the teams in Zone ‘A’, while Cornelia Ida (CI), Windsor Forest, Zeeburg, Vergenoegen, Parika Warriors and Parika Rangers will vie for top honours in the other zone.
The total sponsorship is worth $750,000.00 and includes the payment for balls for 30 preliminary matches, the two semi-finals and the final.
The winner, runner-up and third placed team will collect prize money and trophies while a match between the Barakat Brothers All Stars team and an Essequibo or Georgetown first division team will be played after the competition.
At the launching, Barakat said the competition was fixed for August but due to the bad condition of some grounds on West Coast Demerara it had to be postponed. Barakat urged those who are in charge of grounds to keep them in good condition so this competition will be finished in six weeks before the expected rainy season begins.
“Due to the long delay we have decided to play 34 games instead of the regular knock out base which normally consists of 16 games”. Barakat informed.
Organizer Troy Khan explained that this is the third competition the Barakat Brothers is sponsoring this year.
“The first was 40 overs, then a 20/20 for the first time ever on the West Coast Demerara. All the teams will be using the white ball – coloured clothes and black sight screen which will be a historical event for the players and their fans. I urge the players to lift their standards of play during this competition and make it an unforgettable event on the West Coast Demerara,” Khan added
The winner will get $100,000 and Trophy, the Runner-up $50,000 and a Trophy, the 3rd placed team $25,000 and a Trophy and the 4th place side 15,000 and a Trophy.
The Man-of-the-Match in the Final receives $10,000 and a Trophy while the Batsman with the most runs in the competition gets $10,000 the Bowler with the most wickets takes home another $10,000 and a Trophy.
In the ‘winner take-all’ All Stars match, the winner will get $50,000 and a trophy.
The competition bowled off last Tuesday.
