GFC beat Flamingo, Conquerors survive Rosignol attact
By Franklin Wilson
The third day of action of the Second Namilco Football Festival produced the first major upset of the championship when East Demerara’s Bakewell Buxton Stars ended any hopes defending champions Guyana Defence Force had of retaining the crown with a stabbing 1-0 win.
The East Coast side, which is coached by the only female football coach known in Guyana at this level, achieved the result with 10 men after Sion Thomas was sent off for his second bookable offence 11 minutes to game time.
Airtight defence and excellent goalkeeping by 17 year-old Brian Robinson combined to take them into the quarter-finals and a date with the winner of the Alpha United / Determinators match up which was scheduled for last evening.
In other results on the night, GFC easily disposed of Flamingo 4-0 while Fruta Conquerors survived a scare to get past a resolute and determined Rosignol United 3-2 in an exciting duel.
On field action commenced very late due to blackout, a similar situation prompting the organisers to reschedule the very game between the Army and Buxton. It was not a good start to the evening, but for whom?
As it turned out, the Army suffered permanent blackout from this competition by becoming the third team to walk the plank.
After a stiff first half which saw both teams going at each other, Buxton did not waste anytime in seizing their chance to rock the nets. One minute into the half, Ruben Morrison received a pass from the outside right and made no mistake in blasting past Dellon Young standing between the uprights for the Army.
It was a stunning goal as the former defending champs did not even have the time to settle.
There after, chances were created by both teams but it was to be Buxton’s night as they dominated their opponents who did enjoy a few good moments of their own.
The Fruta Conquerors / Rosignol match-up started at a very brisk pace with the Berbicians proving to be dangerous at times in the opening minutes. They even missed a golden opportunity to strike first.
But Conquerors’ experience came to the fore as they were patient in absorbing the speedy attacks by New Amsterdam while stitching a few of their own. And even with the visitors dominating, Conquerors were able to nose ahead with a Jomo Hinds goal in the 35th minute.
The second half proved to be very exciting and had the fans at the edge of their seats especially the final 30 minutes. Manasseh Primo (50 & 63) blasted a double to increase the lead for Conquerors which had looked way beyond the reach of the country side. But they displayed great heart and fight.
Shawn Brutus almost fired them back into the game with a brace of goals, first in the 66th and then the 83rd minute.
Enough time was left for either team to score but as it turned out neither of them were able to trouble the score sheet again. It was a formidable and satisfying display by the team from the Ancient County.
Conquerors will face Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in the first quarter-final game this evening from 18:00hrs, the latter were easy 4-0 victors over Flamingo.
Rodwell Wellington scored twice in the first 12 minutes to set up the win for GFC. He was on target in the 3rd and 12th, Peter Parks added his in the 39th while substitute Gavin Whyte sealed the issue in the 58th. accomplishments so far and is confident that he will do well at the upcoming championships in Linden.
“Stefan is presently preparing for the SSEE exams and I’ve told him that he must ease down playing so much and concentrate on his schoolwork since even to get a scholarship, one must have a good academic background,” Woseley said.
Kaieteur Sport wishes him the best at the National Schools Athletics Championships.
