This year’s schools athletic season has been a real revelation, one that has witnessed the emergence of a cadre of young stars all of who s
eems set to illuminate the local and international scene in the near future.
One of those who appear destined for an exciting career on the track is F.E Pollard student Stephan Cort who has already made a name for himself after repeated outstanding performances since his arrival in the sport.
Cort has been one of the most dominant athletes during this year’s edition of the athletic season, literally destroying his opponents, easing to victory in all his events from the 100 metres to the 400 in the Under-12 category.
Such was his margin of victory that many pundits in the athletics arena have already picked him as the overwhelming favourite to produce similar performances at the National Schools Championships scheduled for later this month in the Mining Town of Linden.,
A quiet and unassuming resident of William Street, Kitty, Cort gets his support from his mother Michelle Woseley, a single parent, but one who finds the time to attend all the competitions that he participates in.
Forced to miss last year’s championships due to severe leg cramping and pains in his knee, the short, but sinewy athlete returned with a vengeance this year and has beaten all and sundry so far.
Speaking with his mother Michelle, she said that Stephan has always shown an interest in sports generally, but mentioned that athletics is his first choice and he prefers the sprints.
“I try as far as possible to support him in all his activities, but I also emphasise to him the importance of education,” Woseley disclosed.
Asked whether she would support a career in athletics, Michelle portrayed a wry smile, before mentioning that it is entirely up to him and whatever help he needs she is willing to offer him providing she can afford it.
Cort, who is not attached to any club presently, is surely a special talent that has to be spotted and nurtured.
This young talent has already racked up numerous trophies for his achievements on the track and stated clearly that he is confident of maintaining his supremacy at the next level though not having prior knowledge of the opposing athletes.
Cort when asked to identify his favourite events pointed to the 100 and 200 metres races which according to him he intends to focus on more in the future.
Meanwhile, Michelle, a former athlete in her younger days said that she is extremely proud of her son’s accomplishments so far and is confident that he will do well at the upcoming championships in Linden.
“Stefan is presently preparing for the SSEE exams and I’ve told him that he must ease down playing so much and concentrate on his schoolwork since even to get a scholarship, one must have a good academic background,” Woseley said.
