In a bid to lend its support to the sustenance of the supply of blood at the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), Scotiabank Parika yesterday facilitated a blood drive, which saw bank staffers, customers and members of the Parika community seeking to give blood.
The effort resulted in the collection of 27 units of blood.
And according to a release issued yesterday by the Ministry of Health, other businesses in the area have committed to making blood drives a regular feature in that community.
During the blood drive, Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy visited the bank and was able to interact with donors who were at the time lining up to make donations.
According to the minister, the Scotiabank initiative is commendable, even as he expressed gratitude that the community responded favourably.
It was stressed in the release that the Ministry of Health is appreciative of the support it is receiving from the West Demerara district, which has proven to be the champion collaborator.
In May, the SEWA Guyana organization mobilised the community in the Cornelia Ida area and collected 176 units of blood, which today stands as the largest single blood collection drive in the history of Guyana.
This effort, according to the release, resulted in more than 70 per cent of the blood collected and available for use by patients in hospitals coming from voluntary donors.
In September 2008, the Ministry of Health collected almost 650 units of blood, and this represented a record as the highest volume of blood collected in a single month.
In spite of these improvements, the Ministry of Health is only at about 80 per cent of its target established; and according to the release, “it would take a Herculean effort to meet the target.
“We appeal to the public to continue to be generous in giving blood. As the holiday season approaches, the Ministry of Health is asking all qualified citizens to consider giving a unit of blood.”
In its effort to meet the target of 10,000 units of blood, and also to achieve the goal of 100 per cent voluntary blood donation, the Ministry of Health has developed a programme of national and community collaborators to assist in recruiting voluntary donors.
