East Bank Essequibo defeated Wakenaam by 4 wickets to emerged champions of zone B of the Essequibo Leg of the Gafoor’s nation wide 1st division 20/20 cricket competition played last Saturday in Wakenaam.
In a game marred by on-field incidents, Wakenaam batted first and piled up 174 – 8 off their allotted 20 overs.
Essequibo vice captain Wayne Osborne, who was particularly severe on medium pacer Trevor Benn, coming down the wicket to the bowler hitting him for boundaries on several occasions, top scored with 46 and got valuable support form Navishaul Pooran (30), Roopnarine Persaud (28) and Kennard Lewis (28).
Off spinner Jason Heyliger and Benn picked up two wickets each for East Bank Essequibo, who began their reply nicely as openers Yogister Bachan (26) and Alim Mohamed (29) put together 44 for the first wicket off six overs before Bachan was caught behind off Kennard Lewis (1 – 30).
Jason Heyliger with a run-a-ball 31 ensured his team stayed in the hunt as the Wakenaam spinners managed to apply the brakes on their scoring.
Seventeen year old Imran Khan then had Heyliger stumped before he uprooted the stumps of Dhaniram Lallaram (03) Insan Ali (16) and trapped Trevor Benn (00) lbw, to leave East Bank in trouble.
With 66 required from 5 overs, former Guyana U – 19 player Ryan Hercules entered the fray and handled the situation nicely, hitting five sixes and three fours on his way to 48 n.o and along with Imtiaz Sadick (04 n.o) saw their team home in 18.4 overs ending on 177 – 6. Khan finished with 5 – 19 from 4 overs.
The game however, contained a few on field incidents forcing the umpires to intervene and cautioned the players, especially East Bank’s Trevor Benn who reportedly threatened serious harm to Wakenaam’s Roopnarine Persaud.
After the game Benn was heard using abusive language to one of the umpires, who gave him out lbw and upon his dismissal went into the pavilion and flung his bat and gloves away much to the dismay of the spectators who asked the question, “Is this the behaviour of a senior Essequibo inter county player”.
Earlier, Wakenaam defeated Leguan by 31 runs. Wakenaam batted first and made 167 – 9 off 20 overs.
Navishaul Pooran top scored with 66 and Randolph Harry supported with 23 as Mustapha Zaman and Zaheer Razack picked up two wickets each for Leguan, who in reply were bowled out for 133 in 17 overs.
Zaman returned with the bat to hit 45 while Razack made 24. Kennard Lewis captured 4 – 37 while Imran Khan took 3 – 20 and Nazeer Mohamed 2 – 19 for Wakenaam. East Bank Essequibo will now play the Zone A winners in the Essequibo zone final of the competition.
