Power problems, primarily low voltage, continue to plague the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), and have apparently been blamed for approximately 80 per cent of the water problems in Regions Five and Six.
Chief Executive Officer of GWI, Karan Singh, explained to this newspaper that GWI simply does not have any control over the situation. “We are at the mercy of the power company,” Singh said. He once again reminded consumers that it would be a prudent idea to store water, so that they would have access to it when and if the power failures prevent GWI pumps from working, ultimately restricting the flow of water.
When asked if the high demand for electricity that accompanies the Christmas season would affect GWI, Singh noted that he had heard that the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) was making arrangements to cater for the increased demand for electricity.
“All we can do is hope for the best,” Singh said.
The power company is at present operating at full capacity, and its Chief Executive Officer, Bharat Dindyal, had noted: “We are now faced with Christmas; what happens every year from about mid-September to December is that there is a marked increase on the demand…our demand this year has exceeded our peak last year this time.”
