Barrington falls for 142 as rain wash out President’s Cup match

Torrential rain in Guyana’s Capitol washed out the last day of the final round President’s Cup three-day cricket encounter between the Lance Gibbs Tigers and the Rohan Kanhai Strikers at the DCC ground yesterday.

Shemroy Barrington added just six to his overnight 136 before he was caught behind off former Guyana under-19 medium pacer Kelon Carmichael as the Tigers, resuming on 322-9 were dismissed for 334.
The Strikers, who made 242 in their first innings, were 79-0 when rain stopped the contest just before lunch.

First-Class opener Krishna Arjune, who along with Barrington (twice), Hoomchand Pooran and Derwin Christian scored tons in the three-team competition, continued his good form with 23 not out, while left-hander Maxi De Jonge made an unbeaten 55 on the final day before the Umpires were forced to call off the match at 12:30hrs due to the water-logged condition of the ground.

The competition was won by the Leon Johnson led Clive Lloyd Super Cats and was played as a replacement for the annual senior inter-county competition because of Essequibo’s continued poor showing in the tournament.

The final of the inter-county competition had first-class status until 1990. The national selectors are expected to name Guyana’s squad for the next Carib Beer regional four-day competition sometime next week while two one-day practice matches are scheduled for next week before Guyana’s one-day squad is named for the regional series which will be played in Guyana from November 13-23.
