The Digicel sponsored Martial Arts Group, Black Hawks, returned to Guyana from the 2008 Pan Caribbean tournament held in Trinidad and Tobago with ten gold medals, two silver, 1 bronze and an honorary award.
These medals came as no surprise since the team has always excelled in Martial Arts competitions regionally.
Team leader, Garfield Newton, said that the he is very proud of the accomplishments of his team. “The Black Hawks have been dedicated to the perfection of Martial Arts and we committed hours of practice a day to perfect our skills. We are certainly among the best in the region and for this we are very proud.”
The Black Hawks, who have been working together as a team for five years, caught the attention of Digicel who committed to supporting the group in their endeavours.
Digicel Sponsorship Executive, Shirwin Campbell, said “Digicel is very pleased to be a part of such a successful team. We know that the Black Hawks are committed to success and we admire that and we will continue to support them.”
Campbell added, “Martial Arts is not very popular in Guyana but it is an art that is quite fascinating. It requires deep thought, quick thinking and controlled strength.
This team of young men and women deserve recognition for their outstanding performances. Congratulations Black Hawks you have done Guyana well.”
Black Hawks consist of 30 members: twenty-eight males and two females. The Black Hawks were honoured with a trophy at the 2006 Pan Caribbean tournament for the club with the most medals in a single competition.
Senior Instructor, Garfield Newton also won the World Karate Union Hall of Fame Award in Trinidad that year. The team received the Grand Champion Trophies from the Harpy Eagles tournament held in Guyana this year.
