Young Warriors aim to become the third team from Berbice to lift the Neal and Massy National first division 40-overs trophy, while DCC will hope to join GCC as the Demerara teams to win the title when the two sides clash from 15:00hrs today at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence in the first ever Day/Night club final in Guyana.
Although affected by rain, the historic first ever Inter-County final under lights attracted a large crowd and tonight’s Neal and Massy final; again between players from Berbice and Demerara, should have an even bigger turn out as the night cricket fever at an International venue in Guyana intensifies.
Admission is just $500 with free Parking available and hundreds of fans from Berbice are expected to be at the Stadium this evening to urge Young Warriors to glory in DCC’s own backyard.
This is the fourth Neal and Massy final and first under lights and after Rose Hall Town and Albion took the first two titles, GCC gave Demerara its first championship honours when they took the title last year at the Stadium.
Former West Indies under-19 player Gajanand Singh and Skipper Paul Wintz are the Young Warriors players who played in the inter-county night match, while the pugnacious Derwin Christian and Chris Barnwell are the DCC players who were in the championship winning Demerara team in the inter county competition. A lot will depend on them this evening as their respective teams hunt their first Neal and Massy title.
While DCC was founded in 1912 and has several National titles to their name, Young Warriors was only formed in the mid 1990s their 2006 Twenty/20 title is their only success so far that the National level.
Today’s encounter promises to be a sizzling affair and the atmosphere of watching Day/Night cricket at the Stadium should be an unforgettable experience for those who have never experienced this type of excitement.
After beating Bermine in the Berbice final and West Demerara side Mavericks in the national semis in Berbice, Young Warriors are confident of lifting the trophy.
DCC is also a local powerhouse and the team that better manages the mental pressure in this evening’s final should be the one taking home the trophy.
DCC defeated Mavericks in the Demerara final before taking care of South Essequibo in the National semis, and after two easy games leading up to today’s face-off, the Queenstown unit will need to lift their game mentally as they battle the Cumberland line-up.
Wahied Edwards has been in good form with the bat for the Berbice side and with Singh, Ramdeen, national under-19 batsman Seon Hetymyer, Farouk Hussain, Wintz, Ishwar Singh, Balram Samaroo and veteran Huburn Evans in their side, Young Warriors are well equipped (at least on paper) for a real batting war against a DCC attack which includes first-class pacer Trevon Garraway, Chris Barnwell, Kevin George, Denis Squires, Matthew Marques, Trevon Griffith and former first class off-spinner Garvin Nedd on what should be a flat track and fast outfield.
Barnwell and National wicketkeeper Derwin Christian are among the most dangerous batsmen in one-day cricket if they get going, while Griffith, Jamal Hinkson, Vishal Arjune and Squires will also be depended on to contribute with the bat for the home team.
With another opportunity to be a part of the ‘night cricket’ atmosphere under proper lights at Guyana’s premier cricket venue, a massive crowd is anticipated on what promises to be a Friday evening of fun, frolic and plenty of exciting cricket as the teams battle for the $100,000 first prize. The runner-up will take home $50,000 while the Man-of-the-Match gets $10,000.
