Players allowed to leave President’s Cup
match to play in today’s final under lights
By Sean Devers
Mindful of the fact that West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul allowed to leave the Guyana team in the middle of a first-class innings to collect a West Indies Players Association award in Trinidad earlier this year, National Coach and senior selector Albert Smith yesterday informed that none of the players involved in today’s Neal and Massy national club final under lights at the Stadium will not be prevented from playing for their clubs.
Five players who have been selected to represent their team in tonight’s much anticipated Day/Night final are presently involved in the final round of the President’s Cup three-day three-team tournament which carries a first prize money of $200,000.
Gajanand Singh and Paul Wintz should be turning out for Young Warriors while Derwin Christian, Chris Barnwell and Trevon Garraway should be in the DCC line-up at Providence this evening.
The Neal and Massy Final is scheduled to commence at 16:00hrs while the final day of the President’s Cup competition finishes at 16:30hrs making it impossible for them to be in two places at the same time, especially since the anticipated Presentation ceremony should take place after the President’s Cup game at DCC when the $200,000 should be handed over to the Leon Johnson led-Clive Lloyd Super Cats unless any of the teams register an unlikely outright win today.
Smith, who was the Coach of the Guyana team which lost first innings points to the Windward Islands when Chanderpaul was allowed to travel to Trinidad, said that it is a known fact that this competition is being used as trials for Carib Beer selection but added that the players have requested permission to play in the final at the Stadium and that permission has been granted.
“We understand that this is an important game for the clubs and we (selectors) have decided not to prevent the players from leaving this (President’s Cup) match if they wanted to play at the Stadium,” Smith informed.
The long-serving Coach also added that the team will be selected after the completion of the President’s Cup competition and performances on the final day today will also be taken into consideration.
“While the guys have right to choose where they want to be this afternoon and their decision to go to the Stadium will in no way be used against them when we sit to pick the final team, they must understand that this is an official match being used to pick a Guyana team and that people can step up and perform on the last day….so they are walking at their own risk since we cannot guarantee the selection of any player before the competition is finished,” Smith stressed.
