DEAR EDITOR,
The manner in which garbage is being disposed of on some areas on the East Coast Demerara is horrifying. This letter is to highlight garbage disposal in the villages of Strathspey and Coldingen.
Both the main highway and railway embankment roads are used as dumping grounds for house hold garbage; plastic and glass bottles, plastic bags, tins, styrofoam boxes, old furniture, equipment, and kitchen waste.
Residents use the cover of darkness to dispose of their garbage at Strathspey’s main trench on the public road. As one passes you are greeted with the unpleasant smell and can see large amounts of garbage at the side of the trench; the dump site is getting larger day by day.
I was shocked while passing on the railway embankment behind Strathspey/Coldingen to see huge amounts of chicken entrails that were dumped at the side of the trench, probably from someone who is involved in chicken business. The stench of this place makes one cover their face and run.
The method of garbage disposal in our country is getting out of control. If the situation is not rectified quickly, one wonders what will become of our environment.
Is this where we want our children to grow up – in such a filthy environment? People are just lawless, have no respect for their environment, neighbours and themselves.
Those in authority are either incapable or seem not to be bothered about this disgraceful littering of our country.
Although private disposal trucks operate at a very cheap cost, people are still reluctant to use their service.
Where is the EPA? Is there a break down in governance in our society?
