Twenty-eight-year-old Guyana opener Krishna Arjune hit an accomplished 130 while leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo took 4-15 on the opening day of the final round President’s Cup three-day cricket competition at the DCC ground on Wednesday.
The right-handed Arjune, who has scored two tons and five fifties in 38 First-Class matches, was eighth out as Rohan Kanhai Strikers were dismissed by Lance Gibbs Tigers minutes before the scheduled close for 242.
Unless either team registers an outright victory in this encounter, the Clive Lloyd Super Cats (the other team in the competition which replaced the annual inter county tournament in Guyana) will take the title and the $200,000 (US$1,000) first prize.
Arjune, the leading run scorer in the competition, followed up scores of 56 and 68 with a matured batting display on a flat track and fast outfield as he reached the boundary 21 times in his 185-ball innings before he was bowled by Bishoo in murky conditions.
After play commenced 85 minutes late due to seepage under the covers from morning rain, Arjune, who respected the good balls and dispatched the loose ones with disdain, put together 113 for the first wicket with left-hander Maxi De Jonge, who hit five fours and a square driven six in his 47-ball 35.
De Jonge and former West Indies under-19 batsman Gajanand Singh (5) were dismissed in the space of six runs by national under-19 off-spinner Steven Latcha as the Strikers slipped from their lunch time score of 64-0 to 119-2.
Ex-Guyana under-19 all-rounder Ryan Hercules then bowled Test player Narsingh Deonarine (4) and Orin Forde (8) to leave the score on 147-4 before Royston Crandon and Arjune took the score to 160-4 when rain resulted in an early Tea being taken.
After the break, Arjune continued to find the gaps with fluent drives and pulled pugnaciously when the pacers pitched short.
He reached his century with an edged boundary to third man off 16-year-old National under-17 pacer Seon Daniels before Bishoo, who played two first-class matches this year, bowled Crandon for 25.
Bishoo, who had a five wicket haul on his first-class debut, then quickly sent back Rakesh Goberdhan and Anthony Bramble for ducks before dismissing the rock solid Arjune.
Sauid Drepaul (2) was run out off a deflection off Brandon Bess’ hand, backing up too far, while Kelon Carmichael (6) edged a catch to wicketkeeper Derwin Christian, who enjoyed a good day behind the stumps, to end the innings.
Latcha, who bowled with good control, took 2-27 off 10 overs while Hercules had 2-53 from 11 overs as they supported Bishoo.
