After six years in the High Court contesting the ownership of his land, 60-year-old Chandra Ramoutar Singh has been declared the rightful owner of the land.
The land, which is located at lot 14 Motice, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, was bought under an ‘agreement of sale’ by Singh in 1987.
The man told Kaieteur News that he built his house on the plot of land and even started to plant three acres of rice there to make a living. However, this was not to be the case for six years.
He explained that in 2000, two persons who are residing in the United States of America (USA) caused him to be summoned to the High Court because they produced a copy of a transport, indicating that they are the rightful owners of the land.
Singh said that during the battle for the land at the High Court, he was ordered to move out from his home during the six years and during the time away, someone tried to burn his house down, broke his fence down and his destroyed his rice crop.
The man noted that he eventually won the battle in the court in 2007, and now the judge’s decision has been appealed by the plaintiffs.
Singh pointed out the fact that the plaintiffs have been living in the USA for the past 35 years now and even during the time that the matter was ongoing in the court, one of them was not even in the country but had a power of attorney represent him in court.
His only concern is how long the Appeal last but his lawyers are advising him that since there has been no stay of execution of the High Court order, he should move back on to his property and carry on with his life.
