Defending champs DCC make it two in a row
All Stars beat Champions in feature game
By Sean Devers
The runs flowed, the Carib Beer flowed and a large Diwali Holiday crowd watched as Chris Barnwell copped two individual awards to lead defending champions DCC to back-to back MSC Carib Sixes cricket titles yesterday at the Malteenoes ground in Thomas Lands.
With pulsating music from the Federation Sound System pounding beyond the boundary and the vociferous crowd, which included the charming Carib Girls and several children, having a rollicking time all day, the 20-year-old Barnwell enhanced his rapidly growing reputation as Guyana’s leading young limited overs cricketer with scintillating batting in sweltering heat as DCC beat Berbice side Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar in the final of the second annual final after beating Young Warriors of Berbice in last year’s finale to take the inaugural title.
The pugnacious Barnwell thumped two fours and four sixes in an entertaining unbeaten 40 from just 14 balls as DCC galloped to 71-1 in the final replying to the 66-3 off five overs made by the Berbice team.
Asked to bat on a track with variable bounce, Rose Hall Town were given a 34-run opening start from Assad Fudadin (22) and Royston Crandon (17*) before Fudadin skied off-spinner Denis Squires to deep mid-wicket.
The experienced Andre Percival (7) was then run out in a mix-up with Crandon at 48-2 in the fourth over before Crandon, (with scores of 19* and 41* in the preliminary games) and his sibling Esuan Crandon (6) too the score to 58 when Esuan was bowled by national under-19 player Trevon Griffith in the final over.
When DCC began their reply, they took 14 off the first over before national wicket keeper Derwin Christian, like he has s done so often in his career, lofted a might six before giving his wicket away shortly after with an impetuous swing.
After Christian departed for six at 20-1 in the second over attempting to hit the Fudadin out of Georgetown, the level-headed Barnwell and Griffith (14*) carried their team to victory and the $60,000 first prize and Trophy.
DCC got past Transport Sports Club (TSC) while Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar got the better of host Malteenoes in the semi-finals.
Barnwell, who copped the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and the Man-of-the-Match in the final, slammed 37 from 18 balls to lead DCC, who were at one stage on 15-3, to 64.
DCC recovered after the third over; bowled by Demerara medium pacer Kelon Carmichael, cost 25 runs. TSC, not helped by reckless batting, were then dismissed for 51 as only Carmichael (13) and Travis Blyden (18) reached double figures.
In the other semi, MSC fell for the competition’s lowest total (42) as Shemroy Barrington (15) was the only batsman to reach double figures as Fudadin the top bowler in the competition with six wickets form his three overs, grabbed 3-8 and got support from Percival (2-7).
The visitors took just two overs to reach 43 without loss as Royston Crandon who clobbered 41 from 10 balls with seven fours and two sixes, launched a vicious attack on the bowlers.
In the day’s opening match, MSC, led by 31 from Barrington and 30 from Orin Forde beat Police by 23 runs despite 37 from Troy Benn.
Barnwell (37) and Derwin Christian (24) then led DCC to an 11-run win against GNIC after GNIC had looked dangerous; scoring 27 off the first over bowled by off-spinner Kevin George.
Squires then took 2-5 for DCC after Mark Montfort (20) and former Guyana player Kevin Bazil (15) had offered some hope for GNIC.
And TSC beat GCC by 18 runs as Watkin Marcus (26) and Blyden (16) batted well to see their team to 68. Wasim Haslim top scored with 23 as GCC fell for 50.
Rose Hall Town beat Young Warriors in an all-Berbice match-up after Young Warriors fell for 49 and Royston Crandon (19*) and Percival (16*) led Rose Hall Town to 53-1. Fudadin took 2-8 with his controlled off-spin for the Corentyne side.
Losing finalist Rose Hall Town collected $40,000, while Barnwell got $30, 000 for his two individual awards.
And the Leon Johnson led All Stars team whipped a complacent looking DCC line-up by five wickets after reaching 61 without loss in reply to the 60-2 made by DCC in the feature game after the final.
Jamal Hinkson (20*), top scored for DCC before a Man-of-the-Match unbeaten 30 which included some breath-taking reverse sweeps and shovel-sweeps, led the All Stars to victory as Royston Crandon supported with 17 not out.
The All Star team collected the winner-take-all $35,000 while Barrington received $8,000 for his efforts in the competition which was well supported by the fans and the media.
The organizers thanked their premier sponsor Carib Beer along with the Trophy Stall who donated the trophies and Industrial Safety Supplies who provided the white balls.
MSC thanked the Umpires Eddy Nichols, Shannon Crawford, Nigel Dugid and Clyde Duncan for a job well done along with all four of the Daily Newspapers and NCN TV for covering the event.
