The residents of Diamond, East Bank Demerara are at their wits’ end, following reports that a man from within the area is visiting homes, pretending to be an employee of the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL).
One resident of the community, who prefers to remain anonymous for fear of her life, told Kaieteur News that, at approximately 6:00 hrs on Sunday morning, she heard someone calling at her gate, waking the entire family.
According to the resident, upon enquiring, the man told her parents that he is an employee of GPL, and that he was there for the readings from their meter.
The family, however, found this to be very strange, since it was very early in the morning and the man was not in the company of anyone else from the company. They also noted that he had in his possession a GT&T telephone directory and a yellow note pad, along with a portable radio.
Since the members of this family were once the victims of a robbery under a similar case, they were very fearful of letting the professed GPL employee into their yard. However, according to the family, the man was very insistent that he be allowed in the yard, as he displayed a badge bearing the letters, ‘GPL’ on it.
The family, though still not convinced that the man was an employee of the power company, nevertheless, let him in the yard, whereupon he then insisted on going into the house, where he can see the meter. But the family told him that he can read the meter from standing outside of the verandah.
The alleged GPL employee still insisted on going into the house, but since the family did not allow his request, he told them that he was going to the Grove Police Station.
When the man left the premises, the resident said, her father took the family’s car and traced the man, finding out that he never went to the police station, but instead walked into Caneville. It was then that the family decided to make an official report to the Grove Police Station, where immediately several officers started a search for the man, but it proved futile. Other residents in the same community related that they find the incident very strange, since their homes were not visited by any GPL employee during that very day.
The family is of the opinion that the man is an imposter, and was probably ‘eyeing’ their house in order to come back and rob them.
The family is now urging persons in the Diamond community to be on the lookout for any person pretending to be a GPL employee, and to always be on the alert.
