More workers face imminent separation

As the Guyana Power and Light continues its rationalisation process, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Bharat Dindyal, has said that the separation of the last batch of workers is imminent. The company is currently engaged in a thorough assessment of the entire process.
Dindyal said that, from the onset of the exercise, the company was looking at separating some 250 workers; however, despite the separation of two batches already, the utility company has not yet reached that target.
In January, 43 workers were separated, in March, 52 were separated, and in April another 36 were separated with their full severance packages.
It is expected that by the end of this year, all 250 workers would have been separated, following the completion of a modern mechanical plant which was to have been set up in Kingston.
This plant is to replace the 55-year-old steam turbine power station located at Kingston.
However, according to Dindyal, the deadline for setting up this modern mechanical plant has been pushed back until mid-next year.
In the meantime, he said, the full statement on the separation of the next batch of workers will be made public within another week’s time. He added that the power company is doing a thorough assessment on the entire rationalisation process, and the workers themselves as well as the public will be made aware of the next step, having taken into consideration the new plant in Kingstown has not been completed.
Meanwhile, the information technology programme, which was supposed to be set up for the workers who have already been separated, has not yet become a reality, after being in the making for some five months.
When contacted yesterday, NAACIE General Secretary Kenneth Joseph said that all the equipment for the programme is ready and the training is expected to begin within another two weeks.
He said that, currently, NAACIE is making contact with those workers to inform them about the commencement of the training.
In an earlier statement, the power company had announced that the rationalisation process is part of a detailed mechanical modernisation plan that includes the eventual closure of the old steam turbine power station located at Kingston.
This rationalisation exercise that the utility had started has a direct bearing on the significant increases in the cost of GPL operations.
