The Guyana Japan Karate Association is expressing its sincere gratitude to all those who assisted in whatever way to make their tour to the 2008 ISKF World Shoto Cup Karate Championships in Toronto, Canada possible and a success.
This World Championship attracted entries from three hundred and ninety-six athletes representing thirty-two countries in divisional events for youths, adults, and seniors over 45 years.
Guyana’s national team, which was made up of four adults and nine youths, participated in twenty-six youth events and nine adult events. They made the finals in six individual youth Kata and Kumite events and one youth Kata team event and medaled in all of them.
In the adult division they made it to two event finals and medaled in the female Kumite event. The self sponsored athletes also medaled in three events and made up three of the teams that medaled. The final medal count is 7 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze from 13 events.
Mention must be made of Nathalie Gibson who made the final of the adult female Kata event and finished eight, Samuel Ming who made it to the quarter-finals of his individual Kumite event and Phillip Ramalho who finished sixth in the Boys 16-17 individual Kata and was stopped from continuing in the individual Kumite quarter-finals due to injury from contact to his nose. Each of these events attracted 30 and over entries from 12 or more countries.

The Guyanese contingent won a lot of respect from their fellow competitors and this has placed Guyana right up there as a karate nation.
Next August the Caribbean Championship will be in St. Lucia, the PanAm Championship will be in Puerto Rico in 2010 and the next World championships will be in Barbados in 2012.
