‘Big John’, Jagnarine & Rahim set new records, Morgan cops best lifter trophy
By Franklin Wilson
‘Big’ John Edwards was in great form even though not 100% but strong enough to break three records at the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation’s (GAPLF) / Guinness ‘Reach for Greatness’ Championships last Sunday at Banks DIH Thirst Park.
Also in record breaking mood were Berbician athletes, Vijay Rahim and Bhojkumar Jagnarine. Copping the best lifter overall trophy was Randolph Morgan ahead of veteran Winston Stoby and Edwards.
Edwards, competing in the men’s open 125kg / 275 lbs class, achieved a squat of 749.25 lbs, bench pressed 501.5 lbs and had a dead lift of 666.75 lbs for a total of 1,917.5 lbs.
The new squat record erased his old mark of 743.75 achieved in 2005. The new dead lift record replaces his 2006 mark of 655.75 while the new overall total eclipsed the old mark of 1,890 he set in 2005.
16 year-old sensation Vijay Rahim of Berbice, who caught the eyes of all at the junior and intermediate championships earlier this year, was again in the spot light among the seniors.
Rahim, competing in the juniors/men open 52kg (114lb) category shattered the dead lift record of 369.25lbs with a new record of 413.75lbs. The old mark was set by R. Rambally in September 1998. Rahim also had a squat of 330.5lbs and bench pressed 148.75 for a total of 892.5lbs to win his category.
The other record breaker, Bhojkumar Jagnarine, also from the Ancient County, clipped the old dead lift record in the men’s open 75kg (165lbs) class of 606 set by Winston Stoby in 1990 with a new mark of 611.75. Jagnarine who totaled 1,394.25 lbs, bench pressed 270 and squatted 512.5.

Noticeably absent from the meet were athletes from traditional powerhouse Upper Demerara.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony delivered the feature opening remarks before declaring the championship open.
Meanwhile, GAPLF President Peter Green disclosed that a team will be selected to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Championships next year in the Cayman Islands pending the results of the random drug testing the Federation carried out for the first time in keeping with international regulations.
