The occupants of Lot 17 Le Ressouvenir, on the East Coast of Demerara, have their neighbour to thank after fire almost destroyed their two-storey building last night.
The neighbour used his water pump to fight the blaze, which started at about 19:00 hours.
Shamdai Khan, who occupied the building with four other family members, told this newspaper that the fire started in the front of the house, and completely destroyed two bedrooms, damaging several household items.
She said that she was downstairs when someone called, shouted that there was a fire in her house.
By the time the members of her household responded, the fire had already engulfed a mattress and curtains.
“No fire tender come. Is a neighbour come with he pump and we used the sideline water fuh out it,” she told this newspaper.
By the time the fire tender arrived, the blaze was already put out.
The occupants of the house are blaming the electric wire that leads to the house for the fire.
They related that on several occasions they had observed sparks on the wire, and despite bringing it to the attention of the Guyana Power and Light, nothing was done.
Police later arrived on the scene and took statements.
