‘Operation Safeway’ to be re-launched – Traffic Chief

Despite a 47 percent reduction in road deaths, the police Traffic Department plans to re-launch its road safety campaign ‘Operation Safeway’ to keep road fatalities well below last year’s figure, 207.
‘Operation Safeway’ was launched a year ago, after eleven people perished at Linden and a further six died in a car crash on the East Coast of Demerara.
“We will be re-launching ‘Operation Safeway’ to take us into Christmas,” Traffic Chief Neil Semple told Kaieteur News yesterday.
“There were 207 road deaths last year and we want to keep things down.”
Superintendent Semple said that despite the recent spate of fatalities, there has been a marked reduction in road deaths this year.
For the past eight months, 92 road users perished, while 182 road users died during the same period last year.
The year 2007 ended with 207 road fatalities, the highest in a decade.
In October 2007, 17 people perished in two separate accidents at Linden and on the East Coast of Demerara, at Lusignan. That triggered the launching of Operation Safeway, Semple said.
October 2008 has also been a deadly one for road users. On October 6, NCN journalist Akila Jacobs and minibus driver Terrance Tappin perished at Amelia’s Ward, Linden, after the bus Tappin was driving slammed into the back of a moving truck.
There has also been a spate of hit-and-run accidents, including one at Aubrey Barker Street, South Ruimveldt that claimed the life of GDF Captain Ancel Semple.
In the case of the accident at Linden, investigations revealed that Tappin was not licensed to drive a minibus, while the vehicle insurance and fitness certificate for the truck were expired.
The driver and owner of the truck were charged, as well as the owner of the ill-fated bus.
According to Traffic Chief Semple, the police have been unable to ascertain how long Tappin had been driving the bus.
Semple suggested that Tappin may have escaped scrutiny by traffic ranks because contracted vehicles seldom commit traffic offences.
He urged company officials to ensure that drivers who they employ are all properly documented.
