Following a superb display of raw power and determination, national weightlifter, Sean Cozier, competing in the 94kg class, lifted a total of 265kgs to capture three bronze medals in the Criolla Cup Weightlifting Championships that concluded in Puerto Rico, Saturday last.
The Guyanese weightlifter snatched 115 kgs behind Columbian Johan Arango (150kgs) and David Nieves (130kgs).
He then went on to lift 150kgs in the clean and jerk category before finishing with a total of 69 points. Arano and Nieves compiled totals of 84 and 75 respectively.
The Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) lauded Cozier’s performance and disclosed that it was the best at this level since 2001 when Julian McWatt also won three bronze at the Guatemala Cup competition.
Another weightlifter, Bhojnarine Persaud had attended this tournament last year and placed 4th in the overall standings.
The lifters will enjoy a one month rest period before participating in the next competition on the GAWA calendar; the National Seniors Championship, scheduled for November 9 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Starting time is 15:00hrs.
Meanwhile, the GAWA is indeed grateful for the corporate assistance rendered by several business entities that made it possible for the trip to become a reality. They include Republic Bank, Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and Goodwood Racing Service.
