A party-like atmosphere for the entire family is anticipated today as most of Guyana’s top cricketers aim to light up the Malteenoes ground on a Diwali Day which should be filled with exhilarating cricket and plenty of fun and frolic when the MSC Carib Sixes tournament bowls off at 08:00hrs.
Seven first division teams from the City along with Berbice sides Young Warriors and Rose Hall Town will battle for the $60,000 first prize and trophy and DCC will be keen to defend the title they won last year when they beat Young Warriors in the final.
Each match will be five-over affairs and every player in the team except the wicketkeeper is mandated to bowl an over in the game’s shortest version.
The Crandon brothers should be on show for Rose Hall Town while former West Indies players Gajanand Singh and Richard Ramdeen should be in the Young Warriors team as the teams from Region Six aim to make their presence felt in the Capitol today.
National 20/20 player Chris Barnwell and Guyana keeper Derwin Christian should turn out for DCC while West Indies player Leon Johnson is expected to do battle for GCC.
West Indies under-19 Vice Captain Steven Jacobs and national 20/20 players Orin Forde and Deon Ferrier could be in the Malteenoes line-up, while former Guyana off-spinner Kevin Basil, who played in the last Stanford 20/20 tournament for the Cayman Islands and is in Guyana on holiday, could turn out for GNIC today.
Admission is free and plenty of liquid refreshments will be available at Carib Bar, while Bar-B-Q Chicken and other food will be on sale.
A Popular Sound System will provide entertainment beyond the boundary as the batsmen hope to capitalize on the rule of getting a double score for balls which hit or go over the sight screen at the bowlers end and the bowlers look to keep ‘things tight’ for their teams.
