The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) has extended its training programme to persons who are desirous of joining the teaching profession.
Speaking to Kaieteur News on Saturday, Principal of the CPCE, Myrtle Fanfair, said that for this year, 600 teachers have gained entry into the college; and next year, more than 200 more would be accepted in the Distance Education Programme, which falls under the Strategic Plan for the Ministry of Education.
The strategic plan states that the number of teachers should be increased by 70 percent by 2013, a goal which the ministry is on target to reaching.
The 200 additional students would be placed at CPCE centres across the country.
The training institution has training centres in Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Six, Seven, Nine and Ten.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh said that the ministry also aims to upgrade those teachers who are not trained but who are involved in the education system.
Minister Baksh also noted that the training would be for those teachers who are involved in the pre-service and in-service education systems.
Over the years, Guyana has always been plagued by the migration of teachers, who, after completing their training at the various institutions, would migrate to some other country to share their skills.
When questioned about this, taking into consideration the resources being poured into the education sector without much benefits being derived, Minister Baksh said that, even if there is the migration of skilled teachers from Guyana, the Ministry of Education would still have to ‘fill the gaps.’
He explained that there are those teachers who have to fulfill their contractual obligations before they can migrate. In this regard, he said, the ministry would ensure that these obligations are met.
