Even one of the biggest crowds to descend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for sometime could not rally a visibly rusty and uninspiring Georgetown senior side that crashed to an embarrassing 58-30 defeat at the hands of Linden as the curtains came down on the Annual Nestle Supligen All Star Basketball Extravaganza last Sunday night.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Steven ‘Lighter’ Lewis ignited the arena with a solid all-round performance, netting a game high 19 points to go with 3 blocks, 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while Dwayne ‘Suga’ Roberts supported with 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
For Georgetown, Steffon Gillis top-scored with 8 points and Royston Siland had 6 in a disappointing display.
From the onset, it was clear that the Lindeners were intent on following in the footsteps of their juniors who registered a narrow win the preceding night as they raced to an 11-4 lead at the end of what can best be described as a scrappy first quarter.
Only Lewis showed some flashes of brilliance as he delivered some exquisite no-look and backdoor passes that his teammates struggled to read at times.
The second period brought no reprieve for Georgetown as Lewis, Roberts and company outscored their opponents 18-6 to take a handy 29-10 advantage at the break.
After some exhilarating entertainment by Ivelaw Campbell of ‘Grannie’ fame, Georgetown came out in the third stanza looking more purposeful and actually outscored Linden 16-12 through some solid defending and aggressive plays orchestrated by guard Ryan Stephney, who befuddled his markers and took it to the hole strong.
The period closed with Linden still enjoying a comfortable lead, 41-26 with 12 minutes left in the game.
Needing to check the momentum of their opponents, Linden produced some stifling defence to restrict Georgetown to a mere 4 points in the entire period, while scoring 17 to romp home easy winners.
Centre Jason Alonzo as always was an imposing figure in the middle and executed a few telling block shots, while the experienced duo of Marvin Hartman and Terrence James made valuable contributions on the defensive end.
Later during the presentation ceremony, Trinidadian Lewis was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Meanwhile, the rapidly improving Tyrone Hamid proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the best dunker in the land with another awesome display to capture his second such title after taking home the senior segment the day before.
Hamid was in a class of his own and won the crown by snatching the ball out of the hands of a spectator stationed just inside the arc, before performing a windmill jam that evoked rapturous applause from the capacity crowd.
Linden’s Orin Rose was also impressive as he took home the 3-point shootout in an efficient performance.
The weekend showpiece was an overwhelming success and it really brought out the fans.
