Police on the West Coast of Demerara have detained the driver of a motor van after he had reportedly struck and killed a Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo resident.
Reports are that 30-year-old Ricky Ramnarine was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation on Saturday evening.
According to a police statement, Ramnarine was pushing his bicycle across the Zeelugt Public Road when he was struck down by the motor van.
He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but was subsequently transferred to the GPHC, where he died while receiving medical attention.
The police state that the driver of the motor van, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, has since been arrested, and is in police custody assisting with investigations.
