Triple header brings curtains down
Two rounds of exhilarating and intense football in the 2nd annual Cellink Premier League will end this evening where the 2008 champions will also be crowned.
Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United are in with a great chance of retaining the title and if they do, it will be the third consecutive year that they will be Premier League champions.
Alpha, who will play Fruta Conquerors in their final game which is the main supporting game this evening at the Tucville ground are on 30 points and are in a must win situation to avoid their nearest rival, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) form overtaking them to the championship.
GDF who will play Sunburst Camptown in tonight’s main event, the final game of the season, are on 29 points while Camptown are further back by two.
In event there is a draw in both the second and third matches, Alpha will be the champions but the leading side will not be thinking of a draw but a win to end the season in fine style against opponents who have not been at their best for quite some time.
Alpha’s hopes of victory hinges on their prolific striker Anthony Abrams and Elton Brown who will be back after serving a one game suspension.
Captain and mid field player Shawn Bishop will again be controlling play in the midfield with Kelvin McKenzie in command in defence.
Conquerors, 5th in the standings on 16 points two behind GFC will hope to end the league in style but will have to come real good to stop the hammer from striking again. The defending champs will hope to drive the final nail in style.
Conquerors’ challenge will be led by Delon Williams, Captain Neville Stanton and veteran Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters.
The Camptown / GDF clash is expected to be a keen contest with the former enjoying the better of the previous exchanges which the Army is seeking to change this evening.
Dwight Peters, Gavin Wilson and Stellon David will carry the Army’s battle with Captain Orlando Gilgeous, Troy ‘Buys’ Prescod and Mervin Joseph at the helm for Camptown.
This afternoon’s opening salvo between Santos and Uprising is a bottom of the table clash and will serve as the teams’ farewell from the Premier League ranks at least for the 2009 season. Santos is on 7 and Uprising 4.
What ever the results are this evening fans are surely in for a great treat and exciting climax to the 2008 Cellink Premier League.
