Officer under house arrest
The grenade-toting army lieutenant who had allegedly threatened to bomb the home of his girlfriend’s mother has been detained at Camp Ayanganna.
The army issued a statement on the incident yesterday, and a senior army official disclosed that an investigation is underway to find out how the lieutenant came into possession of his arsenal.
The official conceded that the rank should not have been in possession of the grenade and such a large quantity of ammunition.
“The Guyana Defence Force has launched an investigation into the entire issue regarding the lieutenant, who had been arrested by police in the wake of allegations that he supposedly threatened to destroy the property of a female in Queenstown,” the statement said.
“The lieutenant is currently being held under house arrest at Base Camp Ayanganna.”
Police, acting on information, arrested the officer on Wednesday night with a grenade and over 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition in his possession.
He was detained at the Brickdam Police Station, but was then released.
The grenade and ammunition were handed over to the army.
But a police official said that the police could still prosecute the matter.
They could send the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who could determine to prosecute the officer in the criminal courts.
According to the official, the police have no statement from the parties involved.
“We will have to get a statement from the army, and if they don’t give us one, we may have to move to the court to obtain that statement,” the official said.
And a legal official explained that, under the Defence Act, the army could try the lieutenant for any criminal offence by way of court martial.
“The police simply passed the buck to the army,” the legal official said.
Kaieteur News was told that the parents of the lieutenant’s 16-year-old girlfriend had previously told police that the lieutenant had threatened to burn down their house.
He was not arrested in connection with the allegation, which reportedly occurred about six months ago.
On Wednesday night, the 26-year-old lieutenant turned up at the same Anira Street residence, reportedly after the girlfriend had walked out of his Sophia home.
The teen’s mother said that her daughter went to the lieutenant, who indicated that he wanted her to return to Sophia.
She said that her daughter returned to the house and began to pack a bag.
The woman said that while the officer was standing in the yard, a neighbour observed that he had a grenade in his hand. The neighbour then contacted the police, who arrived and arrested the lieutenant while he was standing near his car waiting for the girlfriend to leave the house.
The teen’s mother told Kaieteur News yesterday that an army official who interviewed her on Thursday indicated that the rank may be court-martialled.
The lieutenant is said to be a member of the Joint Services Operating Group (JSOG).
