The reigning Caribbean and North America and West Indies Rugby Association’s men’s regional champions, Guyana, played unbeaten on Day 1 of the 2008 NAWIRA sevens rugby championships being held in the Bahamas.
These championships also serve as the regional qualifiers for the 2009 Sevens Rugby World Cup to be held in Dubai in March 2009.
The tournament in the men’s division, down to nine teams after the withdrawal of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica, runners-up in 2008, was contested in three pools with Guyana heading Pool C and USA and Canada heading Pools A and B respectively.
There were no real surprises on Day 1 with Guyana topping Pool C after defeating Barbados 34 points to 0, and Cayman Islands by 10 points to 0.
In the first game against Barbados try scorers were led by Claudius Butts (2) and Rupert Giles (2). The two players both also had two conversions to their credit. Tries were also scored by Peabo Hamilton (1) and Dane Parks (1).
In the second match against a very game Cayman Islands, the Guyana men prevailed with two tries by seasoned campaigners, Albert LaRose and Theodore Henry.
The men now go into Day 2 to play in Cup Pool 1 against Winners of Pool A, USA, and runners-up in Pool B, Trinidad & Tobago.
On the distaff side, the Guyana women, in a tough group, started with a loss to Trinidad (5 points to 0) in a game where they had dominance in both possession and position. They then convincingly beat Bermuda by 41 points to 0, in a game which Maurees Skeete scored three tries, Tricia Munroe scored two tries and two conversions, Andrea Lashley scored one try and one conversion, and Carrin Carter, one try.
In their final game against USA, Guyana lost by 45 points to 0.
On Day 2 the women go into the Quarter-finals with a fixture against Jamaica, runners-up in Pool B. The winner of this encounter will move to the Cup round, while the loser will proceed to contest for the Plate Championship.
The day was sunny and excellent for rugby, and saw a fairly large complement of spectators, among whom were members of the Guyanese diaspora in Nassau who came out to witness the game and to support the team.
Keen and exciting rugby is anticipated on Day 2 as two of the leading rugby playing countries in the Caribbean, Guyana and Trinidad, seek to supplant the might of either USA or Canada to gain entry to the World Cup in Dubai.
