The football fraternity in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden and Guyana was plunged into a state of shock following the sudden passing of former Founder, Administrator, Coach and Player of the Silver Shattas Football Club, Troy ‘Chilly Kang’ Richards.
In a press release issued yesterday, President of the Upper Demerara Football Association Bryan Joseph said that the entire football family in Linden was in a state of astonishment when they received news of Richards’ passing by way of electrocution.
“The Upper Demerara Football Association and the entire football fraternity are saddened at the tragic passing of a great servant of football within the Linden community, Mr. Troy Richards aka ‘Kang.’ Mr. Richards passing will leave a huge void within the football Diaspora given his massive contribution as a player, coach, administrator and role model.”
The 35 year-old Richards was involved in the world’s greatest sport for over 20 solid years leaving an indelible and positive impression on the minds of all he came into contact with on and off the field.
He kicked off his career as a member of the Hurricanes Football Club before moving on to Topp XX Football Club now known as Bakewell Topp XX. He shared the coveted title as Kashif and Shanghai champions four of the five times they won Guyana’s premier championship, 1994-95, 1996-97, and back to back in 1999-2001.
During his hey day as a player, Richards played with and against the cream of Guyana’s current stalwarts, the Golden Jaguars, the likes of Captain Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, Collie Hercules, Kayode McKinnon, Richard Reynolds, Nigel Codrington, Shawn Bishop, Howard Lowe and the late Marlon Hendricks and Leslie Holligan.
The versatile and passionate player formed Silver Shattas in 2004 and served as Founder, Administrator, Coach and Player up until the time of his passing on Thursday night.
Joseph said the late ‘Kang’ exhibited undoubted passion and commitment for the development of the sport. “Troy also had stints with the senior Guyana National Team and also played semi professional ball in Trinidad and Tobago.”
Kaieteur Sport understands that the residents in Blue Berry Hill Linden were experiencing unusual problems with their Power supply on Thursday night and Richards, an electrician by profession, went to his girl friends home after practice the said afternoon.
During the power disruption he (Richards) went to unplug the fridge and was not wearing shoes when he was electrocuted.
The UDFA and its affiliates is expressing sincere condolences to the family, relatives, friends and associates of the late Troy Richards and hopes that his work done in football will serve as an inspiration to all and find favor with the eternal father.
Kaieteur Sport also wishes to extend sincere condolences to the relatives and family of the deceased. May his soul, rest in peace. (Franklin Wilson)
