Jamaica will begin their regional One-Day cricket title defence against Barbados at Bourda on November 13, while host Guyana battle the Windward Islands at the Guyana National Stadium when the 2008 Regional One-Day cricket tournament bowls off in Guyana with three first round matches.
Canada, one of two North American teams in the nine-team competition which was originally fixed for Florida, will face off with the Leeward Islands at Everest in the other first round encounter.
After a venue switch from North America to South America, the West Indies Cricket Board made changes to the draft fixtures and changed the dates, venues and teams involved before confirming the latest fixtures which sees 21 matches packed into nine days of cricket at six venues.
Matches will be played at four venues in Demerara and two in Berbice, while the semi-finals and final will be contested under flood lights at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence after the last ‘final four’ was also played under lights in Barbados when Jamaica beat Trinidad and Tobago to lift the 2007 title at the 3Ws Oval at the UWI Cave Hill Campus.
West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Director and President of the Guyana Cricket Board yesterday confirmed that the Young West Indies team which was being touted as participating in the tournament will no longer be involved.
All of the grounds being used for the 50-overs competition are first-class venues and Singh is confident that Guyana will once again host a successful competition since the 83,000 square-mile Country has a rich tradition of hosting successful regional cricket tournaments at all levels in the past.
Seven games will be played at the Stadium, Guyana’s most modern cricket facility and the region’s 10th Test Venue, including the three Day/Night games which Singh feels which attract massive crowds.
The two semi-finals are fixed for November 21 and 22, while the final will be played on November 23. The three Day/Night games are scheduled to commence at 14:30hrs.
Trinidad and Tobago, who along with Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana reached the last semi-finals, play their opening game on November 14 against the Leeward Islands at Bourda while the USA goes into action for the first time when they oppose Barbados on November 14 at the Stadium.
