GPF successfully defends Inter–Services Athletics title

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) eased to a predicted win in the Inter–Services Athletics Championships at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary yesterday.
The red, white and blue clad team chalked up 596 points ahead of the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) 403 points and Guyana Fire Services’ (GFS) 215 points. The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) was fourth with 153 points.
Earlier in the day, GDF won the March Pass competition with 49 points while GPF came second with 46 points and GFS third with 41 points; GPS was fourth with 39 points in that segment of the athletics meet yesterday.
In the marquee men’s 100m final, Police’s Keith Roberts edged Michael Saul on the line to take first place in a time of 10.6 seconds. Saul registered 10.7 for second while Trevon Benn took third in 10.9 seconds.
In the women’s version of the race, Police’s Shivonne Fraser clocked 13.4 seconds to win the race ahead of Wanita Wayne and Sharon Thompson, who registered 13.7 and 14.0 for second and third places respectively.
Saul turned the tables on Roberts in the 200m, winning in a blistering 21.9 seconds with his rival trailing with 22.2 seconds. Quincy Clarke finished third in the race with a time of 23.1 seconds.
Natasha Alder won the female 200m race in 27.5 seconds in front of Wayne (28.7) and Thompson (29.0) respectively. Alder was also adjudged champion female athlete for the annual joint services athletics competition.

Police’s Larry Josiah ensured that his service swept the both the male and female top athlete prize when he was named best male champion athlete.
GDF won the female Tug–O–War competition with GPF in second and GFS in third, while GFS won the male title with GPF in second and GPS in third.
At the Opening Ceremony, GDF Chief–of–Staff, Commodore, Gary Best said that the event has continued to demonstrate its national relevance in terms of development of human resources, planning and task execution.
Best observed that the competition has contributed significantly to the “national pool” of athletes representing Guyana. He said that the event has always aided in the building of teamwork and comradeship among the services. (Edison Jefford)
