Citizens traversing downtown Georgetown will once again be able to keep track of the time of day since City Hall has been able to put measures in place to get the Stabroek Market clock back in operation.
According to City Mayor, Hamilton Green, the clock was put back in working order since last week, adding that he is optimistic that it will remain that way for a very long time.
The clock, which is strategically located on the tower of the market, has over the years come to a standstill, much to the disappointment of many citizens.
Efforts were made last year by the municipality to restore the giant-size mechanism back to normal working order. That stint of operation was however short-lived, Mayor Green said.
He explained that the council was initially unable to retain the services of a gentleman who is knowledgeable of the operation of the antiquated clock since he had retired from the trade.
As a result, Mayor Green said that he had made a suggestion that the municipality hires the gentleman so that he could maintain the clock so that it could remain operational.
According to the Mayor, with the bureaucratic system at City Hall, nothing was done to hire the technical hand.
He divulged that the administration of the municipality at first attempted to employ the man as a labourer, a move which he strongly objected to since the man has the expertise unlike the average technician.
The man has since been employed, the Mayor said, to primarily maintain the clock.
According to Mayor Green, it is expected that the clock as well as the historic Stabroek Market will be highlighted as tourists’ attractions, which could even help to boost the revenue base of the municipality.
