Divisional Commander of the Police East Demerara Division, Senior Superintendent Balram Persaud, said that he is encouraged by the participation and support of the communities under his watch.
In a recent interview with this newspaper, the newly appointed Commander expressed confidence that should the cooperation continue, the police force will definitely bring crime under control in the once volatile district.
According to Persaud, crime has been significantly reduced in the district which once earned the unenviable reputation as the crime capital of the country.
“We have continued with our patrols, both Aberdeen and mobile, and we’ve been successful in keeping things the way it is right now. We hope that our increased presence will continue to boost the confidence of the communities. We have been encouraged by the participation of the various community policing groups. And as they continue to help us we will definitely, with the cooperation of the citizenry of ‘C’ Division, keep crime down,” Persaud stated.
He said that he recently met with the executive of the East Demerara Community Policing body who, he said, has pledged its unwavering support to the police.
Kaieteur News understands that all of the Community Policing Groups, with the exception of Buxton, are functioning.
But according to the Commander, the police will do everything to cooperate with the law abiding citizens to resuscitate their community policing activity.
“Once the interest is there, we will do all that is possible to have that group resuscitated. They have my total support and I am confident that once those people come forward we will form that group and I am sure that that group will function well,” the Commander told this newspaper.
Persaud has had experience working on the East Coast of Demerara, having served as Deputy Commander a few years ago.
He said he plans to use his previous experience to the benefit of policing in the division.
“I’ve been here as the second in command, so during that period it gave the groundings of how this division really operates.”
Now that he is Commander he is positive that he will get the support of the ranks to carry out effective policing.
“I’ve made it quite clear that I will not accept irregularities or poor service delivery to residents of the area,” Persaud added.
He assured that his office is always open to members of the public to listen to their complaints.
“These people when they come to the station, they have nowhere else to go and nobody else to turn to. So we must let them feel satisfied when they leave our stations” the Commander stated.
“It is good when you open your door to see people. You can actually tell the areas where you have problems with service delivery. Because once you see people coming from a particular area, you will be able to pinpoint the station that is not operating as it ought to,” he added.
The East Coast of Demerara has seen a significant decrease in criminal activity, since the security forces rooted out criminal elements from the village of Buxton, which was their haven.
However, senior police officials indicated that there is still some more work left to be done to ensure that the threat of criminal activity is reduced.
