– surprises forecasted
Experienced pundits will wait after the completion of today’s events before they cast bets predicting the likely winner when the Annual Inter–Services Athletics Championships commences after a ten–year hiatus.
The event, which will feature most (if not all) field events final along with the 3000m for female and 5000m for male final, is slated to get underway at 10:30 am at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Guyana Police Force Games Officer and member of the Joint Services Sports Committee, Colin Boyce told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the opening will comprise a march–pass of teams and a declaration of sports open.
According to Boyce, Acting Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, Guyana Defence Force Chief–of–Staff, Gary Best, a Commander or the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony will formally open the event.
Apart from the field events, 3000m and 5000m final, today will also witness the staging of the 100m, 200m and 400m heats along with the Tug–O–War elimination. The event will continue with the remaining events on Friday.
Asked for a forecast of the meet, Boyce said that it will be difficult to do because of the absence of the event for so long, which coordinated with the non-existence of the Guyana Defence Force athletics event for the same period.
“The Army have spent a long time out of the championships, so we don’t know what kind of competition they will be bringing or what will be on show. We don’t know what to expect from the other services either,” Boyce stated.
The Guyana Police Force is the defending champions and will be looking to retain that title against the Defence Force, the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Fire Service when the competition starts today.
The championship is being staged under the title: ‘Building Confidence Through Sports’ and will also feature six invitational track and field events and four invitational cycling events on the final day on Friday. (Edison Jefford)
