Guyana team suffers mixed fortunes
Guyana’s junior squash team experienced mixed fortunes on the opening day of the VII Pan American Junior Squash Championships in Lima, Peru.
On Monday, three members of the team that won the Caribbean boys team championship, Deje Dias, Alexander Arjoon and Raphael DeGroot all experienced emphatic loses to superior opponents in the first round of the individual competition.
Later in the day, the girls did their best to redeem the boys, with Mary Fung-A-Fat and Keisha Jeffrey both registering emphatic wins of their own, over Winifer Bonilla and Nicole Gordillo of Guatemala and Ecuador respectively.
Ashley Khalil and Kayla Jeffrey received byes into the second round and were due to get into action yesterday morning.
The Pan American championships is an under 19 tournament, which includes an individual championship as well as doubles and team competitions. Guyana will be competing against teams from Argentina, Barbados, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru and Mexico.
