“He has only been to the fountain, but I’ve been on top the mountain,” a confident Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis told Kaieteur Sport shortly after concluding another training session yesterday.
Lewis made this comment in reference to Howard Eastman, who he is scheduled to fight for the national middleweight title on the McNeal Promotions / Stanford Solomon Boxing Card dubbed ‘The Perfect Storm’ this Sunday, at the Guyana National Stadium.
“This is no disrespect to him, he is a very good fighter who fought some of the best, but unfortunately has never won a world title,” Lewis declared.
The former WBA welterweight champion admitted that the fight is a very important assignment for not only him, but his camp, family and fans and was not going to allow Eastman to impede his march back to the top.
“I’m mentally and physically in excellent shape and preparations have been going well and I must say everyone has been really nice to me.”
Lewis added that everybody connected with his preparations has shown a lot of appreciation during his training, especially his coach Lennox Daniels, sparring partners and well wishers and he is not going to disappoint them.
“I’m confident in myself; we are going to take it home no doubt because everyone is looking for me to win the fight,” he mentioned.
Lewis disclosed that a lot of his fans are expecting him to pull it off, while assuring them that come Sunday; he will be the new middleweight champion. He was adamant that he would not let down himself, family and friends, stating that the win will be for all of Albouystown.
Meanwhile, Daniels, who could be heard shouting instructions to Lewis to stay focus and place himself in positions where he can still use his hands, constantly, reminded him that fight time is near.
He too echoed the same sentiments about the importance of the fight. “It is very important for the team, family and fans, but at the end of the day, it ultimately depends on how much he needs it.”
Questioned on where they are in relation to Sunday’s bout, Daniels indicated that all the heavy work has been completed and they are now in the specific phase.
“This means we are refining the technique we intend to employ in the fight, training to capitalise on our opponent’s weaknesses as well as correcting his at the same time.”
He reported that he is extremely satisfied with Lewis’ commitment and dedication, but refrained from making comparisons of the period before he took charge.
“We are confident because we’ve been training hard for the fight,” Daniels pointed out. Daniels promised that ‘Sixhead’ will enter the ring pretty strong and prepared to put on a good show for the fans.
