– two accomplices escape
The victim of a Meadowbrook Drive robbery turned the tables on four gunmen who had invaded his home, at around 08:00 hrs last night, shooting one of them dead and wounding another.
Raheem Lewis, 20, of Victoria Road, Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, was shot in the chest and succumbed minutes after arriving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
He was identified by his mother and grandmother. Another man, identified as Michael Reid, 23, of Bamboo Drive, Meadowbrook, was placed under police guard after he turned up at the hospital with a gunshot wound in the upper left thigh.
Police said that the victims of the attack identified him as one of the gunmen who had invaded the Meadowbrook premises.
One of the victims, Roy Codrington, who was gun-butted during the robbery, was also treated at the GPHC.
The other two bandits escaped with about $6,000 and a cell phone.
A friend of Codrington’s told Kaieteur News that he was having “a quiet drink” with three other companions in a verandah at Lot 282 Meadowbrook Drive, when four men suddenly entered the veranda and ordered them to remain still.
The man said he assumed that it was all a prank until he saw that two of the men, including the now-dead Lewis, were pointing handguns at them.
He recalled that Lewis was wearing three-quarter trousers and a hooded sweater.
According to the victim, the bandits herded them inside, and relieved them of a cell phone and about $6,000.
He said that, during the robbery, the owner of the home suddenly emerged from a room and shot one of the bandits at point blank range in the chest.
He said that the bandits immediately abandoned their task and fled with their wounded companion.
Kaieteur News was told that after fleeing, the bandits summoned a taxi from a Kitty taxi service and placed the wounded man in the back seat.
The taxi driver told Kaieteur News that the men told him to drive to the GPHC and promised that they would follow and pay him when they arrived. They never did.
According to the taxi driver, the wounded man was groaning while bleeding profusely in the back seat.
He was taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit, where he died shortly after.
Some 30 minutes later, another man, identified as Michael Reid, arrived at the hospital with his girlfriend and a relative.
The girlfriend told police ranks that Reid was walking in Meadowbrook Drive when three men relieved him of a cellular phone and shot him in the thigh.
However, police took two of the robbery victims to see Reid, and they identified him as one of the gunmen.
At press time, police were still hunting for the two other suspects.
